The role of immunocytochemistry in diagnostic pathology.
This review suggests that immunocytochemistry in diagnostic pathology can be performed using relatively small panels of antibodies and that it should be reserved for situations in which, for one reason or another, the pathologist cannot exert his or her conventional diagnostic skills. Examples include the diagnosis of tumours the true nature of which is uncertain because of anaplasia or poor mo...
متن کاملDiagnostic relevance of peripheral blood immunocytochemistry in hairy cell leukaemia.
AIMS--(1) To assess the diagnostic relevance of peripheral blood immunocytochemistry in hairy cell leukaemia (HCL); (2) to compare the immunostaining of bone marrow biopsy specimens with bone marrow and peripheral blood cytospins; (3) to evaluate the sensitivity of the different markers used; (4) to identify the ultrastructural localisation of DBA.44 in HCL variant. METHODS--Immunoenzymatic sta...
متن کاملComputer-aided analyses in diagnostic histopathology.
ALMOST every branch of pathology has derived benefit from greater objectivity and greater quantitation. However, diagnostic histopathology remains obstinately subjective and non-quantitative. Although a well developed art, it is heavily dependent on experience acquired over a long period of time. Even so, experienced pathologists will sometimes reach confident but differing diagnoses on the sam...
متن کاملDiagnostic utility of p16 immunocytochemistry for Trichomonas in urine cytology
We present a case in which p16 immunocytochemistry helped establish the diagnosis of Trichomonas in urine from a male patient. Based on this finding, we recommend p16 immunocytochemistry as a diagnostic tool for unexpected patients or specimen types in which potential trichomonads are identified following routine cytologic evaluation.
متن کاملImmunocytochemistry and DNA-image Cytometry in Diagnostic Effusion Cytology. II. Diagnostic Accuracy in Equivocal Smears
To determine sensitivity and specificity of different antibodies for the immunocytochemical detection of malignant cells in diagnostically equivocal effusions in comparison with those achieved by DNA-image cytometry. 65 cytologically doubtful effusions of the serous cavities were stained with twelve antibodies. Furthermore, DNA-image cytometry was performed. Data were correlated with patient fo...
